Think (T20) produces, discusses, consolidates and presents ideas on how to face current and emerging challenges that may be addressed by the Group of 20. The T20 brings together think-tanks, G20 research institutes and countries invited by the rotating presidency. Since its establishment in 2012, the T20 has been widely regarded as the ‘ideas bank’ of the G20. It consists of a dynamic network of research institutes and experts from across the world who provide vital input into G20 processes.
Organized by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA), the Institute for Global Dialogue (IGD) and the Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation (IPATAC), the T20 South Africa Summit took place in Johannesburg on 13 and 14 November 2025.
As the think tanks converge on the G20, the T20 South Africa Summit brought together leaders from government, national and international think tanks, academics, and representatives from the public, private, and civil society sectors.
The summit’s purpose was to deliberate on the critical policy recommendations formulated by the T20 think tanks throughout 2025 and formally present the final recommendations to the G20 South Africa.
FEPS President Maria João Rodrigues participated in the summit in Johannesburg and spoke in the opening plenary “Quo Vadis Global Governance?”.
In her speech, she addressed issues such as the role of regional organisations like the EU in strengthening global governance and enhancing the G20 as a platform for fostering dialogue, bridging divides, and coordinating collective action on global challenges.
