On 3rd December 2021, Maria Joao Rodrigues spoke at the High Level Group Conference on European Democracy where she defended a new vision for European citizenship and called for a stronger role of the European Committee of the Regions in the next phase of the European project, in line with the ongoing democratic transformation of our societies. She is a member of the High Level Group on the Future of Europe chaired by the former President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy, which is tasked to produce a report on the future of European democracy to be presented in March 2021 under the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
